I started
Dallas Karaoke for fun. After running a show for David
Quinn for a couple of months, I found out that I have
never had so much fun working. I decided to buy a small
system and start my own company. In November of 1991 I
got my first club, Speeds Billiards on Forest and
Audelia. Slowly but surely, more and more clubs booked
shows with us. My goal has always been the same, to have
fun every night I worked and I try to put that into my
shows. We strive to have one of the most entertaining
shows in the D/FW Metroplex. Our mission is to be
bigger, better, and stronger. We will always strive to
be more than just karaoke, We work to put on a show that
even the customers who don't sing will enjoy. To put it
simply, "If I can get you to do nothing more than have
fun for four hours, I have successfully achieved my
goals". |

Angela Nicole Coleman, known by the
karaoke world as “Nikki” always enjoyed singing and
dancing in school productions growing up. She attended
several dance groups in ballet and jazz as a child on
the encouragement of her Mother and later even assisted
her cousin Shelly Kaye in instructing smaller age
groups. Although her first experience around karaoke
left her more courteous than hooked, and she watched in
amazement as singers flooded the host trying to sign up
their choice favorites. It took a little liquid
encouragement to bring her to try it on her own. She
had been a devoted follower of Dallas Karaoke from the
early years when DK started Speed’s Billiard’s in Dallas
off Forest Lane. She met many new friends and was
instantly considered a true DKer. By 1995, Nikki had
become a crucial part of the Dallas Karaoke Marketing
team assisting in networking the team of hosts and
location for their show needs and tools in paperwork
promotions to song slips. Although it was slow going,
it soon became crucial as Dallas Karaoke gained 21
accounts with a host team of 8. She previously had a
background in hospitality and bar management, after
working for several locations in DFW, and this proved
vital when in 2000 she took over as the Director of
Marketing, following Susan Werth, now owner of Karaoke
PitStop Internet Magazine. Over the years to follow
Nikki filled many gaps covering hosts and assisting in
setup and breakdown while dealing directly with club
owners, management, staff, and the singers who followed
Dallas Karaoke. She became co-owner of Dallas Karaoke
in 2002. As Dallas Karaoke wound down, she handled all
management needs in Lee’s absence, while preserving the
opportunity for a new start of Dallas Karaoke (should
that be the direction). Her main job now is as Mother
of the two youngest Dallas Karaoke staff team, Tristian
and Hayden VanSteeter. Alex Lee & Nikki plan to marry in
November 2006. Whatever the future holds for Dallas
Karaoke, it will be a true family business with Nikki
continuing her position sharing the management load. |

I met Lee when he had a
show in Lewisville at a place called 8 ball Willie's
somewhere between the years of 1993 and 1995. I had been
somewhat of a regular to the place when Rave
entertainment had it. Had my share of Rave and took a
leave of absence from the place. When I decided to
darken the place again, Lee was there! I enjoyed his
show so much, I asked him where else he had shows. I
then became more familiar with the Garland area at
Skillman Street pub! It just evolved for me after that.
I found myself acting like an idiot with him at his
shows. He was such a scream! Still is. I don't know why
he did it to this day, but one particular evening at the
show he had at 8 balls in Lewisville, he took me off to
the side and asked me if I would consider working with
him as a K.J. Needless to say, I jumped at the chance!
He started training me at Skillman St. I loved it. After
roughly about a month of training I was turned loose on
my own. Finally, I got to do a show by myself!
Unfortunately, I guess my nerves got the best of me and
caused an ulcer to flare up and I was by nature forced
to go to the hospital! I felt shitty in two different
ways!! I hope if Dallas Karaoke is ever revived, I'll
get my second chance! A month and a half is nowhere near
enough time to show anyone what I can do besides sing!!
I'm now a G.S. at an auto repair shop called Repairs
Unlimited! I of course still go to sing karaoke, just
not as often. So my visits to karaoke may have
dwindled...but my friendship with Lee VanSteeter still
stands strong! Anthony Stokes aka The Journeyman...Steve
Perry sing alike, or Ant.

Yes, Lee
VanSteeter gave me my start as a KJ. Austin Avenue
basically put me on the map. My first year there, I was
voted on of the top DJ's in Dallas by the Dallas
observer. I also picked up a few more shows, like Game
Day in Plano. So here I was, Fridays and Saturdays doing
a Karaoke show in 2 places in Plano and at the top of my
game... So I did Karaoke shows for about 5+ years all
over the Metroplex. Had my ups and downs, mostly ups and
made a lot of cool friends along the way. My last gig,
which was just a DJ gig was at a place in Arlington, TX,
called Moose and Vinny's. Wednesday nights used to be
slow, but I got them hoping and setting record sales
almost every week. I left there to move on with my new
life. Since leaving the DFW karaoke / DJ scene, I
have.... ... Basically had a change of careers in
several directions. I worked for a Computer Support
Company as a manager, which brought me back to my
beloved New York in Watertown. However, my love
for adventure soon led me to sign up for the volunteer
fire department. I had no idea at the time that in
that simple moment I was truly changing focus. As
I began the rigorous courses, I was hooked! I am
now a full-fledge fire fighter license nationally
working for the Naval base in South Carolina. I
still have my hands in the music business. I began an
online radio network called GSRB (Get Smashed Radio
Broadcast Network) with some friends back in DFW. But
sadly after a little over a year we called it quits. I
turned my interests to a new online station called
Radio-XTC with my friend Joe, but after the move to NY,
it filtered out. Happily, once I settled in SC, I hooked
up with old DK buddy John Hutchison and revamped
www.GSRBnetwork.com
now running 24/7 with a complete request line. I
tour on my vacation time from the Fire Department
visiting old & new friends. So I guess long story short,
once a DJ always a DJ....

Lovingly
known as "The Doughboy," Wess now entertains many
regulars at weekly KA shows in the DFW Metroplex.
However, his talented career began after apprehension
had been numbed. His first experience at karaoke found
The Doughboy wanting to participate, but reluctant to
attempt it at MissQue in the early 90's. It took 5
shots of liquid courage to butcher Garth Brook's, "The
Dance." Then it sparked leading to a weekly quest to
challenge every song in the book for the same fate. In
attempts to feed his new addiction, he followed karaoke
nights across DFW meeting others who, as he, were
suffering from the same affliction. There was no
challenge too great and Wess found himself with the new
desire to host the show himself. He became a host and
karaoke jockey for Humperdink's and later added shows
working with Dallas Karaoke in addition to his already
active karaoke nights. In 1997, Wess branched out on
his own by forming Karaoke Anonymous and happily holds
meetings weekly for those who now have an addiction to
feed.
